The automated passenger counting enhancement uses infra-red detectors mounted in the ceiling space above each door to count passengers as they enter or egress the vehicle. The detectors are connected to a localised analyser providing proven intelligent detection of flow of passengers to accuracy greater than 97%.
Data from each analyser is aggregated through a carriage controller allowing the passenger counting data to be transmitted to the APC controller. Internal communications within the vehicle use a rail proven power-line communication technology over existing train wires. This removes the need for modification or additions to inter-car jumpers.
Data is stored at the APC controller for each door, captured for passenger movements both on and off the vehicle. The data is referenced against both door and vehicle identifier and is stamped with time and geo-location tags. This allows for targeted analysis of vehicle occupancy and passenger flow against station location and time of day.
The passenger count data is transferred back to base using the Mobile Real-time Communication Module carrying over a cellular GPRS network. The data can be transferred on an event such as each station visit, by scheduled frequency such as daily, or on-demand by request from the centralised base station.
The data is text based, open standard format and can be viewed using the application software provided as part of the system. The data may also be exported in a comma separated variable (CSV) format to standard packages such as Excel for further manipulation/reporting.
A single combined back-office server is provided for access and analysis of passenger counting data. The back-office server contains the web based application software that may be accessed from remote locations using the Train operators own standard PCs equipped with an internet browser. The server also provides a fleet management view of the system to provide diagnostic and performance information to maintainers.
